Among the different hair restoration techniques I offer is something I like to call a “megasession” hair transplant for my Nashville patients. Although not every doctor uses the same name, the method can be found nationwide at the practices of reputable transplant surgeons.
I call this surgical method a megasession because it allows me to transplant 2,500 or more grafts, easily containing 5,000 or more total individual hairs, in a single session. The technique is commonly referred to as the “strip method” of hair transplantation, because it involves removing a thin strip of skin and hair follicles from an area of the scalp where hair is thick.
I then remove individual follicle grafts from the strip of tissue and insert them in the desired area. Other hair transplant methods involve removing the follicle grafts directly from the scalp, meaning those procedures are more tedious and don’t allow as many follicles to be moved at once. Patients may need to have several such transplant sessions to achieve the same results as in a single megasession.
Many of my patients appreciate being able to complete their transplants in a single surgery. Not only is it more convenient, but it also tends to be more discreet than having to take off work and avoid social situations for multiple recovery periods.
After a megasession, patients usually take a few days to recover, and sutures are removed from the back of the scalp after 10 to 12 days. New hair starts to grow from the transplanted follicles after a few months, and final results are typically visible after 8 to 10 months.
