I often tell my plastic surgery patients in Nashville that there is no crystal ball for predicting their results, but there are some things patients can do to help determine their fate. Here are some ways you can help ensure you’re happy with your cosmetic procedure:
Choose a board-certified plastic surgeon. Researching plastic surgery should begin with finding an experienced, board-certified physician. A plastic surgeon who has been certified by a recognized board completes a minimum of five years of surgical training following medical school, including a plastic surgery residency program. Many surgeons also go on to additional training in surgical procedures of the face and the entire body. Ask surgeons you’re considering about these credentials.
Browse before-and-after photo galleries. I provide numerous photos on my practice website showing the results I achieved with patients for specific procedures. As the saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” Surgeons should have these photos online or available at your request for any procedure you’re considering. If a plastic surgeon says he or she doesn’t have before-and-after photos, it should be a red flag.
Clearly communicate your goals. Excellent plastic surgery results begin with your first consultation with a surgeon. Consider the consultation as more of a conversation, not simply a time to absorb information. When you talk about your cosmetic goals, your plastic surgeon can spell out your options and the possibilities and limitations of each. Prepare questions for this meeting, so you leave with a sense of understanding. When your goals and expectations align, you are more likely to be satisfied with your results.
